Where it started
I began playing techno in 1991 through the emergence of the techno and house scenes which developed out of acid house from about 88/89. Originally playing at and promoting all manner of parties from clubs, to squats to outdoor free parties in and around Wolverhampton.
I met my current business partner at the seminal Que Club in 1994 and we began working together, firstly with me playing for his notorious Jedi Sound System under my original guise of Gizmo and latterly through the joint promotion of a number of nights including the renowned Trance Europe Express and Genetic, which we set up as an opening night promotion at the relaunch of the Sactuary. Ben and I began playing a 4 deck set under the name ZX81, at which time we also started producing together. A combination of critical acclaim and promotional successes, coupled with a number of EP releases led to us being booked to play across the UK and into mainland europe, plying a blend of minimal and germanic technco to club and festival audiences. This led to sponsorship deals with vestax and intimidation and wider industry acclaim.
In 1997 we were signed up by Undercover Music Group and had a worlwide distribution deal, which saw our music sold to a worldwide audience and us often playing to audiences in the 1000s. The scene ebbed and flowed between the underground and commercial scenes and several nights came and went. We continued to promote Genetic and Genetic records up until 2001, playing some great parties and laying on some notorious free parties around the UK. After much moving around, we struggled to find a suitable permanent home for Genetic so decided to pull out of promotion all together, but continued to play a number of clubs in the UK.
I started to recieve bookings for tech house more than techno playing alone again for a while, before bringing back Genetic for one last hurrah in 2004 as part of drop beats not bombs, fulfilling a long term ambition of playing out of a guy called gerald. As life moved on I decided to take and extended sabatical concentrating on family and professional life but have recently begun writing again and dusting off the records.
